EXCITING VOCALIST Atlantic Notes features acclaimed singer and multi-intrumentalist, Marianne Knight.
‘Atlantic Notes’, a show dedicated to music, song, story and dance along the Wild Atlantic Way, starts a summer run in Westport Town Hall tonight (Tuesday) – but if you miss it, don’t panic! It will be staged every Tuesday night for the rest of the summer.
Atlantic Notes originated in the mind of the show’s producer, Kilmaine man Tom Lynskey, some time ago. A keen musician himself, he always wanted to come up with something unique and different in terms of a show. Having seen for some time so many of three-piece groups having lots of success both locally and internationally he felt there was an opening to inject some power into this beautiful sound.
“I have recruited some of the best musicians in the business, and most hail from Mayo, so they know exactly what the Wild Atlantic Way is all about!” says Lynskey.
Actor Noel Kelly’s delivery of a serious yet funny side to Irish life along the Wild Atlantic Way is complemented by performances by world-class musicians and dancers.
In the opening scene, Noel becomes a hard-working fisherman from Donegal. Later he tips his hat to WB Yeats in Sligo, gives a loud shout out as a troubled Mayo supporter, embodies a Connemara man, and does a turn as a grumpy sheep farmer from Kerry who’s not a fan of Star Wars.
Singer and multi-instrumentalist Marianne Knight oversees the musical side of the show with well-known pianist and musical director John Flately. Hot Press magazine recently commented that Marianne’s ‘clear, bright voice and crisp ornamentation make her one of the most exciting vocalists to come along in years.’
Most recently, she has been singing with a traditional Irish group, ‘FullSet’ and performing with the musical theatre group Celtic Crossroads at home and in the US. Marianne has shared the stage with many great artists internationally, including Solas, Cherish The Ladies, Céide, Eileen Ivers, Mairtin O’Connor, Seamie O’Dowd, Brendan Graham, UCD Chorale Scholars, Eimear Quinn, Celine Byrne and Full Set.
Other performers lined up for Atlantic Notes include Declan O’Donoghue on percussion, Karen Hickey on fiddle, Richard Neylon on pipes, with other surprise guest musicians and dancers set to appear over the summer.
Atlantic Notes will be staged every Tuesday night over the summer in Westport Town Hall Theatre. For tickets (Adult, €25; child €10), contact the box office on 09828459 or book online at www.westporttheatre.com.
