Glorious Glória to perform in Louisburgh

Going Out

Ciara Moynihan

Dublin’s highly acclaimed LGBT+ choir Glória will perform their summer concert, ‘Happy Together’, in the Parochial Hall, Louisburgh, on Saturday, June 15, at 8pm, with audiences invited to ‘experience the camp to the classical’ under musical director Ian Packham.
The event was recently announced to the masses via video by none other than the Queen of Ireland herself, Ballinrobe-born Panti Bliss. In her own inimitable style, she expresses dramatic incredulity at the idea of such an event taking place in her traditionally conservative home county. “In Louisburgh? GLÓRIA?” she exclaims, wide eyed, scarlet lips askew. “The lesbian and gay and bisexual and transgender choir based in Dublin? … What has the world come too?!”
Glória, Dublin’s Gay and Lesbian Choir was founded in October 1995, when an ad in Gay Community News invited interested people to meet to establish a choir. About 25 singers turned up, some of whom are still members to this day. The choir is now 54 strong.
Glória was first formed to provide a safe and comfortable space for gay and lesbian people to meet and sing together, and to promote a positive image of the country’s growing LGBT community. Inclusive, welcoming and supportive of people from all backgrounds and walks of life, irrespective of gender identity, it boasts a truly diverse membership.
The choir’s repertoire is similarly varied, with musical hits interspersed with classical madrigals and a whole lot more. They say that their songs ‘are chosen sometimes to surprise, sometimes to challenge, but always to entertain!’.
Not only have they delighted audiences all around the country over the past 24 years, they have also enraptured concert goers in London, Munich, Montréal, Boston, Miami and San José.
Obviously loving the idea of the upcoming Mayo date, a pleased-as-punch Panti signs off her video plug with “Louisburgh! A gay choir! Who’da thunk it?!” – Indeed!

Doors open at 7.45pm. Proceeds to support Mayo Pride. Tickets (€10 each) are available in Staunton’s Pharmacy, Louisburgh, and online (search for ‘Glória DLGC presents Happy Together’ at www.eventbrite.co.uk). To find out more about the choir, visit www.gloria.ie.
