Let yourself be hugged by jazz

Going Out

GUTSY Saxophanist Meilana Gillard, who is joined by bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady in RBG Trio.

The RBG Trio, a jazz band comprised of the saxophonist Meilana Gillard, bass player Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady, will perform in The Clew Bay Hotel, James St, Westport, tomorrow evening (Wednesday), May 29.
This exciting trio was born earlier this year, after the musicians played together for the first time in Dublin in January. Their joy was palpable at the gig, and it was clear this collaboration could develop and thrive. In March, they had a highly successful trip to Mexico, appearing as the Kevin Brady Trio at the EuroJazz Festival, and since then they have formalised the group under the RBG Trio name.
Meilana Gillard was born in England and grew up in Ohio. She has been based in Belfast since 2012.
Gillard cut her professional jazz teeth in New York, emerged as a rising star in that city’s vibrant jazz scene whilst studying music in the early 2000s. She has worked with US icons Charli Persip, Christian McBride and also Greg Osby, who released her debut album Day One on his Inner Circle Music label in 2009, as well as Debbie Reynolds, Glenn Campbell and the New York all-female big band DIVA. She has been described by Cormac Larkin in The Irish Times as ‘a gutsy, inventive player with a forceful melodic sense and an open old-school tenor sound’, adding that her ‘full-throated contribution to the saxophone trio canon is as charming as it is courageous’.
Dave Redmond is ‘one of the most consistently sought-after bassists on the scene’ (The Journal of Music). He is recently returned from a highly successful tour in Europe with George Colligan and Darren Beckett, and is best known for his collaborations with renowned Irish and international groups and musicians, including the acclaimed American pianist Bill Carrothers as part of the Kevin Brady Trio; Larry Coryell; and the UK jazz vocalist Ian Shaw. He is also a member of both the Phil Ware Trio and the Tommy Halferty Trio and he also plays with Yurodny, one of Ireland’s leading world-music groups.
Described by All About Jazz US as ‘an impressive drummer with strong chops, impeccable taste, creative and most notably, terrific tone’, Kevin Brady is a professional musician from Dublin with over 20 years’ experience performing and recording both nationally and internationally to huge acclaim. In 2006, he began to lead his own piano trio, featuring the aforementioned Redmond and Carrothers. The group have given highly successful performances in the US, Europe, China and the Azores.
Together, Gillard, Redmond and Brady have been described as ‘a musical hug of a trio’ – head along to the Clew Bay Hotel tomorrow night to find out why!

The RBG Trio are being hosted by Westport Jazz, a group of local jazz lovers dedicated to bringing top-class acts to the town. Start time, 8.30pm; admission, free.
