RISING STAR Hazel Doupe stars in Martina Niland’s latest film, ‘Float Like A Butterfly’
The award-winning film, ‘Float Like A Butterfly’, produced by film-maker and Aughagower native Martina Niland (‘Once’, ‘Sing Street’) is currently showing in cinemas across the country, including The W Cinema in Westport. Written and directed by Carmel Winters and shot in various locations across the stunning West Cork landscape, the film has garnered rave reviews at festivals worldwide, from critics and audiences alike.
Float Like a Butterfly is a powerful and timely story of a girl’s fight for freedom and belonging in the early ’60s. Some people say it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, but for Frances (Hazel Doupe), a 17-year-old member of the Travelling Community, losing is not an option. At stake is her own freedom, her mother’s honour and her father’s faith.
This unmissable multi-award-winning Irish film is about championing the underdog. It features stellar performances from an outstanding cast, including Hazel Doupe, Dara Devaney, Johnny Collins, Hilda Fay, Aaron Monaghan, John Gerard Healy, Jamie Kierans, Amelie Metcalfe, Aidan O’Hare, Lalor Roddy and Lisa Lambe.
Awarding it four stars, reviewer Paul Whitington of The Irish Independent describes ‘Float Like a Butterfly’ as ‘a grim but lyrical film, a stern rebuke to those who like to talk about the good old days’. Donald Clarke of The Irish times dubbed it ‘an Irish boxing movie that stirs the blood’ and ‘a proper crowd-pleaser’, praising Doupe’s performance as a ‘funny, awkward and inspirational’ Mohammad Ali-mad teenager.
