VERSATILE Pat Kinevane s spellbinding Fishamble performances have drawn audiences nationally and internationally.
Pat Kinevane makes a welcome return to the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, tomorrow evening (Wednesday), with ‘Underneath’. Written and performed by the spellbinding Cork actor, ‘Underneath’ is his third one-man play with the Fishamble theatre company and director Jim Culleton.
Like ‘Forgotten’ (2006) and ‘Silent’ (2011), which were populated by elderly, homeless and mentally struggling characters, this third play is a ‘blackly comic, rich and vivid tale of a life lived in secret, a testament to the people who live on the fringes’.
Here, we meet an unnamed woman, who speaks to us from beyond the grave about her life as someone disfigured from an early age. Kinevane’s extraordinary physicality, his acerbic wit-with-a-wink and his willingness to push the boundaries all combine to create another unforgettable character, freed from the margins to take centre stage at last.
Critics have described ‘Underneath’ as ‘extraordinary’ (New York Times), ‘brilliant’ (Irish Times), ‘riveting’ (Los Angeles Times), ‘delightful’ (Irish Independent) and ‘stunning’ (The Scotsman). It also received the Adelaide Fringe Best Theatre Award in 2016, The Scotsman Fringe First Award 2015, and the Best Solo Performance award at the LA Stage Raw Awards in 2016, and was included on the Forbes’ Best Theater on Broadway and Beyond List 2016.
Curtains up at 8pm on Wednesday, April 17. To book, contact The Linenhall Arts Centre on 094 9023733 or visit www.thelinenhall.com.
