London to learn about our Pirate Queen

Going Out

LONDON BOUND Acclaimed biographer Anne Chambers.

As part of the celebration of St Brigid’s Day on February 1, author and Granuaile expert Anne Chambers will be interviewed at the Irish Embassy in London before an invited audience. The interview, which will be conducted by Irish Times journalist Róisín Ingle, will delve into the topic of ‘Grace O’Malley – The Woman Behind the Legend’.
Chambers’ definitive biography, ‘Grace O’Malley – The Biography of Ireland’s Pirate Queen, 1530-1603’, was first published in 1979, and a special 40th-anniversary has just been released.
The author is thrilled to be sharing the 16th-century figure’s fascinating history with audiences in the UK capital. “I am delighted to bring the true story of Grace O’Malley back to London, where she made such an impact over 400 years ago,” Anne said, “and especially now at this time when she shines as an inspirational beacon to what women everywhere can achieve, like her, even in the most deamanding and difficult environments.”
Excerpts of Chambers’ play, ‘Matriarchs’, about the meeting of Grace O’Malley and Queen Elizabeth I – part of which was first showcased in the Town Hall Theatre Westport in Feile Cuan Módh last year – will also be performed at the event by the celebrated actress Olwen Fouere. A production of the full play is being planned to take place in London later this year.
