Whileaways to give Westport a whirl

Going Out

IN HARMONY The Whileaways will play in Matt Molloy’s on August 20.

Riding high on the instant popularity of their third album ‘From What We’re Made’, acclaimed Galway folk-roots trio The Whileaways will play in Matt Molloy’s on Bridge Street in Westport on August 20.
The band released the first single from the album on June 11 as a teaser, and it set the tone for what was to come. The album followed on July 20, and is already coming in for some serious critical kudos. The single’s A side, ‘Roll Down Your Window’, is a jaunty summer single featuring the band’s trademark interwoven vocal harmonies, while the B side track ‘Spare Me From The Heartache’ is more laid-back.
Comprised of Noelie McDonnell (vocals, guitar), Noriana Kennedy (vocals, banjo) and Nicola Joyce (vocals, baritone ukulele), The Whileaways give folk songs from both sides of the Atlantic their own spin, while also getting a name for their own beautifully crafted original songs.
The trio came to know each other’s singing at music sessions in Galway City, forming a band  in 2012. A successful tour led to their eponymous debut album in 2013.
Their second album, ‘Saltwater Kisses’, was released in 2016 and critically lauded, both at home and internationally. It was chosen as album of the week by RTÉ Radio 1 and received four-star reviews from The Irish Times and American publication The Irish Echo, which described their sound as ‘perfected simplicity’.
Over the last couple of years, The Whileaways have been involved in some interesting collaborations, working with other musicians and bands, as well as orchestras and a brass and string ensemble. When writing the songs on ‘From What We’re Made’, they were influenced by that experience and wanted to include this influence whilst still retaining the captivating vocal sound that they are best known for.
Their third album represents a maturation of the band and their creative aesthetic, and they’re looking forward to giving their audience in Matt Molloy’s a taste of their latest work before they take it on the road. The Westport gig is the first stop in The Whileaways’ nationwide tour, which will also take in Cork, Galway and Kilkenny.
