COLLABORATORS Gerard McNally (right), with Chris Darby (centre) and Donal Hoban.
Westport pianist, arranger, music director and music teacher Gerard McNally is set to release an album of 12 original compositions, entitled ‘Hiatus’, with a special concert in Westport.
Gerard holds a Masters in Musicology from NUI Maynooth, and has taught in Our Lady’s Secondary School, Belmullet, since 1999. However, since 2012 he has had recurrent Liposarcoma, a rare cancer that required many surgeries, chemotherapies and radiation therapy.
While on sick leave undergoing treatment and recovery, for the last few weeks he gave his attention to creating music with his own personal stamp. The music is difficult to categorise, though elements of classical music and jazz are evident. Also it has unorthodox metres, time signatures and formats – yet the sound is very accessible to all tastes.
The launch concert will take place on Friday, May 4, in Westport Town Hall Theatre. Some of the pieces are for solo piano, and will be performed on grand piano.
For the rest, Gerard will be joined by his collaborators, Chris Darby, Ballina (bass), and Donal Hoban, Ballintubber, (drums). Proceeds from the album sales will go to Mayo Cancer Support Association (Rock Rose House).
