JAZZY German pianist Michael Wollny.

Multi-award-winning German jazz pianist Michael Wollny has taken the European jazz scene by storm in recent years, thanks to the electrifying spontaneity of his live gigs and a series of highly acclaimed recordings. The renowned musician is kicking off a six-date tour of Ireland with the Michael Wollny Jazz Trio – comprised of himself, fellow composer Eric Schaefer on drums and double-bass-player Christian Weber – in Castlebar, where they will perform in The Linenhall on Monday, October 23.
Wollny melds jazz, rock, pop and classical music into a thrillingly inventive whole, with excursions into Alban Berg, Edgard Varése, the Twin Peaks soundtrack and The Flaming Lips sitting alongside original compositions penned by the trio.
From tender ballads to wild roller coaster rides, the ideas come thick and fast, each almost tripping over the last as Wollny pursues his trademark for unpredictability.
