On Tuesday, October 18, the hallowed venue of Holy Trinity Church, Westport, will host a unique evening of sublime music. In a heavenly blend of top homegrown and Scandinavian talent, Luka Bloom – one of Ireland’s best-loved singer/songwriters – will be joined on stage by a 30-woman-strong choir from Copenhagen, the Østerbro Pigekor.
Bloom’s new album, ‘Frúgalisto’, was released earlier this year, and he has been on a nationwide tour over the past few weeks. During the tour – his first in six years – he has been joined by different artists in different venues.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming Holy Trinity performance, the prolific Clare-based singer said he is really looking forward to the concert, adding that it will be ‘something very special’.
“The Østerbro Pigekor is an acclaimed Danish girls’ choir from Copenhagen, Denmark,” he explained. “They came to Clare in 2012. I had the privilege of singing with them a few times during their visit.
“It was such a joyful and deep experience, sharing my own songs with these fantastic singers from Denmark, led by their gifted director, Marlene Lollike, so I cannot wait to meet, see, and hear them again … To sing with these people in one of my favourite places in Ireland, Westport, will be just great. Thank you life.”
Musical director and conductor Marlene Lollike continually leads her choir into new fields of sound and rhythm, with multiple layers and nuances. Østerbro Pigekor practise, give concerts, participate in choir competitions and co-create annual music projects with Danish musicians. Once a year they travel abroad with their mixed repertoire of Nordic contemporary and old folk-music and own singer/songwriting.
In July 2012, when they visited Ireland for the first time, the extraordinary collaborative work began with Luka Bloom, which culminated in a memorable concert in Kilfenora, Co Clare, with Bloom and the Lismorahuan Singers. Later the same year, Bloom went to Copenhagen to perform with the choir again. Østerbro Pigekor are now picking up the thread from 2012, and their second visit to Ireland will be for this exclusive concert with Bloom in Westport.

Doors open 8pm, concert starts at 8.30pm. Admission €15.
