An art exhibition by well-known Westport-born artist Pat Tracey will go on display in the Achill Art House Gallery on Friday next, July 29 and will run for the month of August.
Pat now lives and works in Newport and his paintings are primarily figurative, and range from simple portraiture to intricate narratives.
Often using humour, he depicts scenes using social, psychological, and political issues. Anatomical distortions separate the figures from the photographic ideal, which gives him the freedom to create his own distorted reality. His work is described as ‘twisted and offbeat, sentimental, and disturbing’.
Speaking to The Mayo News last week, Pat explained where he drew inspiration for his unusual art-work.
“It’s mostly from daily life, for example there is a painting there of me (pictured) where I am the cowboy. It’s about the times when everyone was young and wearing holsters and cowboy hats, that sort of thing,” he said.
“Lots of inner psychology stuff, it’s all painted from inside the head, there is no pictures or anything like that, it’s all quite psychological really.”
As well as being a painter, Pat works in graphical design and regularly contributes to The Mayo News with his cartoon work, where he has also been employed for Cashin Print and Berry Print Group in the past.
The Westport man also explained what to expect if you decide to go along to the exhibit.
“You will see stuff that you may never have seen before, which I think is a good thing. It’s unusual and it’s unique. Most art exhibitions are portraits and landscapes, where this is more personal and more surreal, you wont see it around too much.”
The exhibition will be officially opened by Mayo News columnist, Liamy McNally at 9pm next Friday night at the Achill Art House Gallery.
