IT’S THE WAY HE TELLS ’EM?Navan comedian Tommy Tiernan.
Tiernan proves Mayo’s a small world
Ciara Moynihan
Tommy Tiernan is back in the county this summer for another whistle-stop World Tour of Mayo, playing in eight venues, from Cong to Ballina. We might think of him as a Navan man, but his Mayo roots go deep. With family connections in Cong, Kilmaine and Louisburgh, he comes from a long line of Mayo teachers, farmers and priests. One of his forebears set up the first school in the county (for that Tommy would like to apologise).
The comedian has always felt especially at home here, and he considers his tour a homecoming of the ancestral sort. Speaking to The Mayo News a few years ago, Tiernan gave an insight into why he loves the county so much: “There is a gentleness about Mayo that I like. The more a place is surrounded by nature, the more unpredictable and lively the people are.”
Unpredictable and lively are two traits Tommy himself embodies, often taking risks other comedians dare not. Through storytelling and a high-energy, non-apologetic delivery, he continually challenges his audience. Live, his stories unfold lyrically, leaving his fans rolling in the aisles.
Tiernan’s World Tour of Mayo will stop off in Matt Molloy’s, Westport, on July 3; McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, on July 4; Hotel Ballina on July 5; Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, on July 6; The Lodge At Ashford, Congm on July 10; The Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, July 11; the Leisure Centre, Belmullet, on July 12; and The Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, on July 13.
