A LOCAL councillor has called on Castlebar Town Council to purchase the historic Imperial Hotel on the Mall in the county town with news that the building has been placed on the market at a reduced price of €1 million.
The historic hotel was famously the location for the foundation of the Irish National Land League in 1879. Iconic Mayo man Michael Davitt was one of the leading members of the movement which sought land reform and a better deal for tenant farmers.
Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere feels that the reduced price of the building makes it an ideal opportunity for Castlebar Town Council, in conjunction with Mayo County Council to acquire a building for practical use whilst also taking charge of a building with huge historical significance.
“I believe that every effort should be made by Castlebar Town Council in conjunction with Mayo County Council to purchase the Imperial Hotel in Castlebar. The building has many possible uses such as converting the upstairs bedrooms to offices which would save on public agencies having to rent commercial premises.
“Furthermore, the main meeting room in the hotel and reception area may be used for welcoming dignitaries and offered as tourist attraction in relation to the history surrounding the Irish National Land League. Every crisis presents an opportunity and it would be a shame to ignore this opportunity to invest in an important piece of Mayo history considering the discounted price.”
