WESTPORT Town Manager, Peter Hynes will be named the next County Manager of Mayo County Council, The Mayo News has learned.
Mr Hynes, who is a native of Moycullen, Co Galway will be ratified as the next County Manager following the May meeting of Mayo County Council and he will succeed Des Mahon who retired last November. He is currently the Town Manager of Westport Town Council as well as the Director of Services for the Belmullet and Westport Electoral Areas. He currently lives in Foxford with his wife Catherine and family.
Applications for the €150,000 per annum post were advertised in the national press in January with a total of 20 applications received, with seven called for interview. Director of Services, Joe Loftus and Mayo VEC CEO, Katie Sweeney were among the candidates along with Mr Hynes interviewed for the job.
Mr Hynes has been the Westport Town Manager since 2001 and during that period the town has been awarded the overall national tidy towns award on three occasions. The Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Cllr Myles Staunton congratulated Mr Hynes on his imminent appointment and wished him luck on his new position.
“I congratulate Peter and his wife Catherine on this key position in the county. Under his management a number of projects such as the tidy towns and more recently the smarter travel initiatives have prospered very well in the town. I am sure that in his new position he will continue to work closely with Westport on various initiatives the Council undertake in the future,” he said.
In 2003, as the Director of Services for the Belmullet Electoral Area, he played a key role in co-ordinating the relief work following the Pullathomas landslides, when 200,000 cubic metres of debris swept down the mountainside. He has worked in Mayo County Council since 1984 when he joined as an architect and was the head architect from 1989 until 2001.
