Stretch marks uncovered

If there’s one thing that’s likely send a woman into orbit, it’s the appearance of a new set of stretch marks. Not that they’re a women-only phenomenon – men get them too. They just don’t seem to notice them so much (body hair does have its advantages…).
Contrary to popular belief, stretch marks (striae gravidarum) are not scars – they are simply a build up of collagen caused by skin that has grown too rapidly. These unsightly blemishes, which first appear reddish-purple but fade with time, most commonly appear on the thighs, abdomen and hips.
Medical treatments for this condition may involve pulsed laser surgery or a chemical derivative of vitamin A known as tretinoin. These treatments may induce redness and scaling, however.
Alternative therapies are available. Creams containing natural vitamin C are helpful. A safe cream containing alpha hydroxy acids and vitamin C or MD Forte is one to look out for. These active ingredients may also be labelled as alpha hydroxy and botanical complex, malic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid or fruit acid.
Keeping the skin moist and supple with natural oils and herbal scrubs provides the skin with much needed hydration to cope with the fast growth of the dermis during pregnancy. Pregnant women should avoid lavender oil. Flax seed oil and vitamin E oil taken orally or rubbed on the skin are excellent. Vitamin A and C supplements can also address stretch mark appearance. Always seek professional advice with any supplementation programmes or alternative remedies.
Dry body brushing can help to increase circulation. Endomologie is a medically approved procedure to stimulate the fat cells, thereby activating the metabolism and vascular system.
Organic herbal peels offer significant improvement and reduction of unsightly lines without any chemical damage to the body. Diet and lifestyle greatly affect skin health. With a personalised programme devised by a qualified professional, stretch marks can be minimised and mollified with massage, effective creams, hydration and stimulation of the skin’s circulation.
With consistent diligence and patience, this distressing condition can be successfully treated. So the next time you gasp in horror at a new crop, take a deep breath and know you don’t have to live with them forever.
