As briefly reported earlier in The Mayo News, the death took place recently of Mrs Delia Dever, James Street, Westport, a much-loved member of the local parish community.
A native of Clooncormack, Hollymount, Co Mayo, she was formerly Delia Mellett and was predeceased by her husband, Martin Dever, James Street, Westport.
Delia was a retired nurse. In a distinguished career she served as a ward sister in St Gerard’s Ward, University College Hospital, Galway. She was later attached to the nursing staff of the MacBride Community Nursing Unit in Westport, where she endeared herself to all the residents in her care down through the years. She was a person of kind and caring demeanour, a people person through and through who always looked for the good in others.
Delia had a great interest in the creations of nature, expressed through her membership of Westport Gardening Club for many years. She was also a member of the Westport Active Retirement Association and took part in all of its activities.
She loved the great outdoors and was a keen walking and swimming enthusiast up to the time of her illness.
Delia was a deeply religious person, a regular attender at Mass and various other services in St Mary’s Church, Westport. She had a special devotion to the Marian Shrine at Knock and loved to attend night vigils there.
She was a founder member of the Westport Bereavement Support Group, and her own great ability to listen and to care brought support and consolation to many going through the grieving process.
Her family are most grateful for the outstanding care and attention she received from all the staff of the MacBride Community Nursing Unit and all her neighbours, especially Tom and Mary Navin and family, Seán and Patricia Joyce and family, and the Moore family. They are also deeply appreciative of the support and friendship given to Delia by Fr Francis Mitchell, Fr Micheál Mannion and Fr Denis Carney.
Delia will be sadly missed by her son, Kevin Dever (London); daughters, Ann Canning (Ballyvary) and Mary Clare Bourguignon (Dublin); grandchildren; in-laws; niece, Mary Hosty-Ó’Ciardha (Dublin); Tom and Marie Mellett (USA) and the Mellet families (Castlebar, Letterkenny, Armagh and Ashbourne, County Meath); the Dever and O’Donnell families; other relatives, neighbours and a very wide circle of friends.
She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Hosty (Ballinrobe), and brothers, Tom (USA), Michael and Paddy (Clooncormack, Hollymount).
Removal was from Navin’s Funeral Home, Westport, to St Mary’s Church, Westport, where Fr Francis Mitchell and Fr Micheál Mannion officiated at the reception ceremony.
The concelebrants of Delia’s funeral Mass were Fr Micheál Mannion, Fr Vincent Kelly, Westport, Fr Tod Nolan, Tuam and Westport, and Fr Pat O’Brien, PP Caherlistrane.
Family members read the lessons and Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Offertory gifts to the altar. St Mary’s Church Choir was under the direction of parish organist, Mr Gabriel Kelly.
Delia was laid to rest in Aughavale cemetery.
May her kind and caring soul have peaceful rest.
