Michael O’Connell

Dublin and Westport
Mr Michael O’Connell, 53 Maywood Avenue, Raheny, Dublin 5, who has died, was a native of Westport and was aged 86 years.
He was son of the late Patrick and Maria O’Connell, Brackloon, Westport, and had retired some years ago from the construction and real estate business.
He was the second youngest son of a well-known and respected Westport family, having been born in 1923. He was brought up in a loving and caring home on the family farm at Brackloon. He attended the local national school and later completed his apprenticeship at Kelly’s of Westport. He later travelled to England where he spent several years in the construction industry.
In 1970 he returned to Dublin where he became involved in construction and real estate.
He loved the great outdoors and his principal recreational interests were walking, swimming and fishing.
To his wife, Joanna, Michael was a loving companion and best friend. To his many nieces and nephews, nieces-in-law and nephews-in-law, he was the unique uncle they called ‘the gentle giant’.
He will be very sadly missed by his wife, Joanna; brother, Charlie (Bray, Co Wicklow); sister, Elsie (Bray); brother-in-law, Joe (Spain); sisters-in-law, Sr Alacoque (UK) and Mrs Brid O’Connell (Westport); nephews and nieces; grandnephews and grandnieces; nephews-in-law and nieces-in-law; grandnephews-in-law and grandnieces-in-law; other relatives and many friends.
Removal was from the Jennings Funeral Home, Raheny, to Our Lady of Divine Grace Church in Raheny where Fr Martin O’Shea, PP, celebrated Requiem Mass for the repose of Michael’s soul.
The lessons were read by Michael’s nephew Seamus (Westport) and his nephew-in-law Phil Noonan.
The Prayers of the Faithful were read by Mary and Noreen Noonan, and the gifts of bread and win were brought to the altar by Eileen and Noreen Noonan.
Cremation of Michael’s mortal remains took place in Glasnevin Crematorium.
Prayers for the repose of his soul were offered at Masses in St Mary’s Church, Westport.
May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
