Lecanvey is in for a real classical treat on Friday, December 11, when world-renowned cellist William Butt will perform in the village church.
Butt, who was born in London, studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Moray Welsh, winning a plethora of awards and scholarships, including the Royal Society of Arts, Martin Trust and first prize in the Muriel Taylor competition. He now enjoys a busy career as soloist and chamber musician. He is also professor of cello at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.
No stranger to the international concert circuit, Butt has performed extensively throughout Ireland, the UK, Europe and the Far East. Much-admired as an exponent of the solo repertoire, he has performed numerous works for this medium by contemporary composers, as well as the formidable solo sonatas by Kodály and Ligeti and the suites of Bach and Britten.
Butt’s performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Ulster, BBC World Service, national television in China, CBC (Canada) and RTÉ radio and television. His recently released recording of the three suites for solo cello by Benjamin Britten was celebrated in the English press, garnering rave reviews in both The Observer and The Independant on Sunday.
The Lecanvey recital will see Butt perform Bach (Suite No 1 in G Major), Britten (Third Suite for Cello Opus 87) and Kodály (Sonata Opus 8 for solo Violoncello) – all on his beautiful cello made by Giovanni Grancino in Milan in 1690.
The concert, a true coup for Lecanvey, provides classical buffs, music lovers and atmosphere junkies a rare opportunity to witness a world-class instrumentalist in an intimate setting with a wonderfully spiritual ambience: What better way to get in the festive mood? (A mood sure to be enhanced by the promise of mulled wine and mince pies at the interval…).
Tickets cost €15 each (€12 for students and OAPs), and all proceeds go to Lecanvey Community Centre.
