HEALTH Treating nappy rash the natural way

Nappy rash the bottom line

Skin specialist
Bernie Fahy

The medical terminology for nappy rash is dermatitis, or nappy dermatitis. This, the most common skin disorder in infants, can be distressing for parents and baby alike.

Causes
Nappy rash presents as redness and irritation on the skin enclosed by the nappy. Often it can be a reaction to ammonia levels in urine retained by the humidity contained in the wet nappy. Persistent rash can also indicate an overgrowth of yeast or candida albicans, which thrives in moist condititions and can be triggered by antibiotics. This post-antibiotic rise in yeast levels can last for up to 14 days.

Natural treatments
Medical treatment for nappy rash often involves anti-fungal ointments. Steroid creams may also be prescribed. However, the stronger the treatment used, the greater risk of side effects. The white of an egg and baking soda in water can prove effective natural solutions to nappy rash.
Diet can play a part in dealing with this condition. Nursing mothers could avoid various foods – cow’s milk, eggs, peanuts and citrus fruits are best left alone whilst breast-feeding. Be careful with soya-milk supplements in infants. If using formula, try to find those containing purified amino acids.
Supplementation could involve probiotics, such as acidophilus, sold in chemists in milk or capsule form. Always consult a professional with regards supplementation. Herbs can also play a part in the healing process. Liquorice cream is recommended.
The key to nappy rash is in keeping the infant as dry as possible. Always try to source breathable nappies. Hydro gels treated with zinc oxide come in sheets and are effective when placed between the nappy and the skin.
Diet, supplementation, herbal remedies and common sense can all combine to battle this common condition. Knowledge of causative triggers and effective treatments can help us to thrash nappy rash fast!
