Alcohol signs turning Westport into ‘a shanty town like Bundoran’

Westport is in danger of ‘turning into another shanty town like Bundoran’ claims one local councillor.
Cllr Christy Hyland (Ind) told yesterday’s (Monday) meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District of Mayo County Council that ‘gaudy signs’ over pubs advertising different alcohol drinks were very unsightly and asked if they were in breach of planning before saying the town was in danger of turning into ‘a shanty town like Bundoran’.
Cllr Gerry Coyle (FG) quickly countered that ‘Bundoran is not a shanty town to be fair’. Cllr Tereasa McGuire (FG) added that ‘we don’t want Westport becoming another honky tonk Las Vegas’.
Cllr Hyland also claimed that a lot of the signs were being put up without the consent of publicans.
Director of Services for Mayo County Council Martin Keating said he would have an update on this situation for the next meeting of the Municipal and that they have started to enforce planning breaches on signage.
Speaking after the meeting Cllr Hyland told The Mayo News he also had concerns that by-law which Westport Town Council had in place for many years which forbade the erecting of election posters in the town could now be redundant due to the abolition of the town council.
“Under no circumstances should good decisions taken by the town council be walked on just because the council has been abolished. We don’t want posters for any political parties in this town,” said the Independent councillor.
