THE body of a Mayo farmer was recovered followed an extensive search of his home area last Friday. Paddy Grogan (57) from Cloonlara, Bekan, Claremorris had been missing since the previous day.
Neighbours gathered to form a search party and were joined by an Air Corps helicopter as tidings were sought of the whereabouts of the missing man. The search ended in sadness with the discovery of his body shortly after midday.
Paddy Grogan, a native of Reisk, Bekan, was well known around the area. He loved traditional music and played the tin whistle and harmonica. His passing evoked widespread sadness and regret throughout the neighbourhood.
Removal took place from the Marian Funeral in Knock on Sunday evening to Bekan Church with burial in Bekan cemetery following Requiem Mass yesterday (Monday).
Mr Grogan is survived by his wife Marie and family of four, daughters Lisa and Belinda and sons Keith and David, his brother Noel, sister-in-law Eileen, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
His death compounded a terrible week of tragedy in the general area. On Tuesday evening, four young students from Galway University died in a horrific road accident five miles away near Ballindine while another woman, Sally O’Brien, lost her life in a car accident at Williamstown , about twelve miles from Bekan, on the same day.
