Daniel CareyWITH the fifth Galway Jazz Festival swinging into action this week, the Headford Youth Big Band will perform in Campbell’s Tavern in Cloughanover, ten miles north of Galway city, next Sunday, November 22.
The 30-strong group is made up of exclusively of students from Presentation College, Headford, and they are currently making preparations for their big gig, which will take place at 3pm.
Music lovers can expect a mix of jazz classics, big-band beats and a selection of vocal classics as well.
The usual big-band line-up of saxophones, clarinets, trumpets and trombones is enhanced with the addition of a luscious-sounding string section.
Most members of the Headford Youth Big Band are Leaving Cert and Fifth Year students, though junior students are also involved.
A number of special guests will also make an appearance at Campbell’s Tavern, including past pupils of Presentation College, former proteges of music teacher Mairéad Berrill.
The four-day Galway Jazz Festival starts this Thursday, with acts from Norway, New York, Dublin, Italy, London, the USA and Germany performing at various locations in Galway city – and Sunday promises to be a particularly busy day for one of the Headford crew, Matthew Berrill, who, after playing his part in Campbell’s, will lead a group of Galway All-Stars at a gig in the Crane Bar that night.
