THE Cong area was in mourning over the weekend following the death of 24 year old Micheal Walsh from Ashford. He died peacefully in Galway Regional Hospital where he had been coping with an illness for the past fourteen weeks.
Micheal was son of Michael and Kathleen Walsh and was an employee of Boston Scientific in Galway where he had worked for the past three years.
Coming from the Galway side of the border near Cong, Micheal was a passionate supporter of the maroon and white and was in Croke Park in 1998 and 2001 when Galway won the Sam Maguire Cup. Those were special days etched in the young man’s memory. He was also a loyal follower of Liverpool in the English Premiership. He loved sport and also had a great intellect for quiz shows on television.
At Boston Scientific on Friday, a minute’s silence was held throughout the sprawling complex as employees stood to attention in memory of their departed colleague.
Removal took place from his residence on Sunday to St Mary’s Church, Cong with burial in Lisloughrey cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by his cousin, Fr Martin Moran, Killanan, assisted by Fr Paddy Gilligan, PP, Fr Colm Kilcoyne, former PP, Cong.
At the start of the Mass, his brother Colm, an employee of Allergan in Westport, paid a special tribute to Micheal. After communion, his sister Jane read a composition he wrote about Galway’s All Ireland final when he was a student in Ballinrobe Community School. And at the end of the Mass, his dad Michael delivered a fond, moving and poignant tribute when reflecting on his all too short a life.
Micheal is deeply regretted by his heartbroken parents Michael and Kathleen, brother Colm and sister Jane, grandmother Mollie, aunts, uncles, relatives, neighbours and friend.
