Nominations sought for Mayo Person of the Year

Nominations are being invited for the Mayo Person of the Year 2010 and the Meitheal of the Year 2010 awards. Nominations sought for Mayo Person of the Year


NOMINATIONS are being invited by the Mayo Association, Dublin from organisations, clubs and individuals for the Mayo Person of the Year 2010 and the Meitheal of the Year 2010.
The Mayo Person of the Year award is one of the most highly coveted and prestigious awards that can be bestowed upon on any Mayo person. It has been awarded to a host of well-known Mayo people over the years and previous winners have included John Healy, Sean Flanagan, Charles J Haughey, Noel Dorr, Monsignor James Horan, Mick Lally, Fr Patrick Peyton, Dr Seamus Caufield and Padraig Flynn.
The current holder is music legend and Kiltimagh native Louis Walsh while Swinford Siamsa Sráide are the current winners of the Meitheal Award.
To qualify for the Mayo Person of the Year award the person must have been born in Mayo, or of Mayo parentage, or who has lived in Mayo for not less than seven years and who, in the opinion of a panel of three independent adjudicators, has made an exceptional contribution to Mayo or its people.
The Meitheal of the Year award will be presented to a voluntary group or organisation based in Mayo, whose majority of its membership were born in Mayo or of Mayo parentage and who, in the opinion of the adjudicators, have achieved the greatest distinction or done most for the county or its people. Previous winners of the Meitheal Award include the Ballyglass Lifeboat and crew; General Humbert School, Ballina; Enniscoe Heritage Centre, Crossmolina; Erris United FC and Hope House, Foxford.
Chairman of the Association Sean Reid stated: “The Mayo Association Dublin is the premier Mayo association worldwide and it is a great honour for the association, through the awards, to recognise the exceptional efforts of individuals and groups who do so much for Mayo and its people.”
The winners will be announced in late January 2010 and the awards will be presented at the traditional annual awards gala dinner in City West Hotel, Dublin, on Friday February 12 next.
Nominations for the 2010 awards must be made in a specified format, details of which are available at www.mayoassociationdublin.com   
 The closing date for receipt of nomination is Friday, December 11.
