Áine RyanSINGING for your supper has taken on a whole new meaning in these recession-filled post-Celtic Tiger days. Frugality doesn’t have to be about bread and water though, as well known food guru Tamasin Day Lewis reveals in her latest tome: Supper for a Song.
And if you call by Seamus Duffy’s Bookshop in Westport on next Thursday evening, November 5, the acclaimed author will reveal some of her tasty secrets on how to live better for less. Slow cooked stews, hearty pasta dishes, silky risottos are among the potpourri of hearty recipes. Leftovers from the Sunday roast are magically transformed into an array of tasty weekday suppers. Indulgent puddings, chocolates and lots of thrifty sweetness create a culinary cowl of comfort as the grey winter approaches.
Speaking to The Mayo News yesterday, Tamasin Day Lewis said: “The first book I wrote was called West of Ireland Summers. I grew up coming on family holidays to Old Head and eating the wonderful produce of Clew Bay and the fare from the Old Head Hotel.”
By all accounts Supper for a Song is about the food of the future. It is a book for the clever cook in the cost conscious kitchen .
Born in 1954 to UK poet laureate Cecil Day-Lewis and Jill Balcon, Tamasin Day Lewis is the sister of the actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who has a home in County Wicklow. Along with her parents and brother Tamasin spent many of her early summer holidays near Louisburgh in County Mayo, where she still has a home.
An acclaimed food writer and television producer and director, Tamasin has also contributed regularly over the years to a number of newspapers and magazines. Tamasin’s cookbooks have covered a range of comforting, rural recipes, from the preparation of seasonal dishes and picnics to the art of pie-baking and slow cooking.
Tamasin Day Lewis will launch and sign copies of her book, Supper for a Song, at 5pm on Thursday next, November 5 in The Bookshop, Bridge Street, Westport. All welcome.
