Steve Earle to play in Galway and Castlebar
Legendary songwriter and political agitator Steve Earle is making a welcome return to Ireland for a series of live dates, including two in Galway (Town Hall Theatre, Monday and Tuesday, November 9 and 10) and one in Castlebar (The Royal, Saturday, November 14).
Born in Virginia, Earle is a veteran of the Nashville and New York folk scenes, and now lives in New York. “The city hasn’t changed as much as real estate agents would have you believe,” he says about his adopted hometown. “Specifically, my neighborhood hasn’t changed that much. I point people in the right direction so that they can take their picture like the cover of Freewheelin’ all the time.”
That’s easy enough for Earle these days, because he and his wife, singer-songwriter Allison Moorer, now live on the very Greenwich Village street on which the famous cover shot for The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1962) was taken.
In that photo, Dylan and his then girlfriend Suze Rotolo huddle against the cold as they walk along a snowy New York street. It’s an indelible romantic image that captures the idealism of the folk revival that was gathering momentum in New York at the time – a folk revival that never went away, and allowed the likes of Steve Earle to blast onto the scene in 1986. (When his debut record ‘Guitar Town’ was released, it shot to number one on the country charts, immediately establishing the term ‘New Country’).
What followed was a diverse array of 12 releases, including the biting hard-rock ‘Copperhead Road’ (1988), the beautifully minimalist ‘Train a Comin’ (1995), the politically charged masterpiece ‘Jerusalem’ (2002) and the Grammy Award-winning albums ‘The Revolution Starts…Now’ (2004) and ‘Washington Square Serenade’ (2007). Earle also produced the Grammy-nominated album ‘Day After Tomorrow’, by the legendary Joan Baez in 2008.
Last May, Earle released ‘Townes’, his highly anticipated follow-up to ‘Washington Square Serenade’. The 15-song set is comprised of songs written by Earle’s life-long friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. ‘Townes’ is also available as a deluxe two-CD set, as well as double Limited Edition 180 gram vinyl. It debuted at Number 19 on the US Billboard Top 200 last.
