Anna Marie FlynnFORMER politician Tom Moffatt is set to develop a state-of-the-art primary care medical centre in Ballina.
In a planning application submitted to Ballina Town Council in the name of Tom and Sean Moffatt, the Ballina doctors outline plans to develop a whole swathe of Kevin Barry Street in a bid to transform it into a primary care centre, office space and retail units.
Tom Moffatt, currently operating from the Ballina Medical Centre, intends to integrate his current premises with his old surgery premises and a premises formerly known as Hurst’s Hotel. Should it go ahead, the plan would see the demolition of the derelict hotel’s first and second floors, as well as two storage buildings to the rear of the site; part demolition of the old Moffatt surgeries and part demolition of the existing Ballina Medical Centre.
In its place, the medical centre would be extended on the ground, first and second floors to facilitate a new primary care facility; three-storey building on the site of Hurst’s Hotel with a ground-floor retail space and first and second floor office space.
Ballina Town Council received the application last week and planners have until October 5 to make a decision on the proposal.
