Ciara MoynihanThe Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival may be over for another year, but folk and bluegrass fans need not despair: Electric Cave Productions, which organised the festival, is making sure that there’s plenty more live music on the way this summer.
The next event for your diary is tomorrow night, Wednesday, July 8,when American bluegrass singer/songwriter Gary Ferguson plays in Geraghty’s Pub, The Octagon, Westport.
Known for his distinctive voice, which has been described as ‘smooth, sweet, full-bodied, and slightly dark’, Ferguson is an adaptable creature, as comfortable fronting a bluegrass band at a large festival as he is appearing in a cozy club.
After penning his first song in 1969 while living in Texas, Ferguson went on to compose songs that have been recorded by both himself and respected bluegrass artists like Larry Sparks.
His song ‘Last Day at Gettysburg’ was not only a big hit for Larry Sparks, it has also become somewhat of a bluegrass classic that has been heard around many a festival campfire.
The appearance in Geraghty’s is part of Ferguson’s fifth Irish tour.
Those who went to the Folk and Bluegrass Festival will be delighted to hear that Gerry will be joined by guitarist Colin Henry, who played with one of the event’s top acts, the Tennessee Hennessees.
The gig in Geraghty’s kicks off at 9pm tomorrow night, and admission is free.
