A PUBLICAN in Manchester is looking for a Mayo couple to run a pub he has purchased in Burnage, south Manchester – located just yards from the home of Oasis rockers Liam and Noel Gallagher (pictured).
The Levenshulme Pub company, which is run by Attymass man, Lawrence Hennigan, acquired the legendary ‘Farmer’s Arm’ pub in Burnage last February and Mr Hennigan told The Mayo News yesterday (Monday) he is eager to get a Mayo couple to run it. The brick-built pub dates back to the eighteenth century and has its own stables from that era.
Lawrence, who runs a number of Irish-friendly pubs in Manchester which were the first to screen GAA games, explained that the pub is undergoing minor refurbishments at the moment and is hoping to re-open in time for Oasis’s homecoming open-air concerts in Heaton Park, Manchester on June 4. To coincide with the three-day concerts, he is planning to host a special marathon ‘Oasisfest’ to welcome the Burnage rockers.
“Mayo is where my family are from and I just wanted to have a Mayo angle to the pub. You don’t have to be from Mayo to run it but my preferred choice would be for a Mayo couple to look after it. The ‘Farmer’s Arms’ is in Burnage where Liam and Noel Gallagher are from and the pub is only 100 yards from their Mam’s house. They would have drank in the pub and they also drank in another pub I own when they were young and skint.
“We want to turn it into a community pub, just like our other establishments in Levenshulme. Part of it will be dedicated to the Irish community, along with a special lounge dedicated to the local supergroup ‘Oasis’. We are already planning a massive Irish music weekend and ‘Oasisfest’ to launch the venue, which will be raising money for local charities.
“There is a massive stable with the original cobbled floor at the back of the venue which is an ideal open-air space and there is a number of rooms upstairs which would make ideal meeting rooms for local community groups,” he said.
