Man dies after Inishbofin dive
A man who died following a disving trip on Inishbofin Island yesterday is the sixth person to have lost their life following a scuba diving expedition in Ireland in the past month.
The name of the latest deceased has not been released, but it is understood he took ill following a dive yesterday afternoon (Monday), and was removed from Inishbofin Island to Mayo General Hospital by the Sligo-based Irish Coast Guard Rescue 118 helicopter.
His death comes on a day when the Irish Water Safety Chief Executive John Leech expressed concern about the deaths of five divers in the past month.
A nurse on Inishbofin was brought to the diver and a paramedic from the Clifden RNLI lifeboat, which was also scrambled to the scene, tended to him before the arrival of the helicopter, but he was pronouned dead on arrival at Mayo General Hospital.
It is reported that he had resurfaced from a dive when he took ill, some time around 2.30pm.
