CORA Staunton made her debut on a rugby field with a stunning all-round display for Castlebar in their Connacht League victory over Tuam, scoring seven tries in their 68-15 victory last Wednesday night in Cloondeash
The Connacht Women’s League is a fledgling competition for the club game in the province, with clubs like Carrick-on-Shannon, Tuam and NUIG and Castlebar, coached by Christy Cusack.
It’s the first rung on the ladder towards competing nationally in the All-Ireland League. Castlebar are in just their second season at this level but making huge progress already. The addition of an athlete of Staunton’s calibre to the team will be a huge help both in terms of tries and profile.
It will surprise no one that Staunton is ideal for the game, and under the floodlights at the Mayo venue last week, she demonstrated a range of skills and a clear feel for the basics of the game too, bursting through tackles, kicking well and turning in the tackle to ensure possession was retained.
It was her pace and balance in breaking free and clear that was the main highlight, however and the seven-try haul will have women’s rugby enthusiasts all over the country taking note.
